[1980s night at Marilyn Springsteen’s Retro Diner and Arcade in Albaneigh. The Oddball Tetrad stands outside, of course in their 80s outfits, as Flannery arrives by bus, also in 80s attire, and also wearing her epilepsy glasses]
Margo: “Flannery? How’d you get Flannery to come here?”
Gilda: “There’s a new salad dish on the menu that she wanted to try when I told her about it. Also, you do know she likes to dance, right?”
[Flannery walks up]
Flannery: “Hello, Grime’s weird friend group.” [sees Wendy] “And hello Wendy.” [waves bashfully]
Wendy: “Hi, Flannery.”
Gilda: “Nice to see you could make it, Flans. Love the earrings, they look really cute on you.”
Flannery: “Thanks. They’re clip-ons. Plus, I needed something to go with the bow.”
April: [notices Flannery’s makeup] “‘ey, what’d ye use fer blush thar?”
Flannery: “Strawberries. And the glitter is tiny quartz shards. You like it?”
April: “Like it? Ah loove it! I gootah try it oot fer mahself!”
[Flannery smiles]
Gilda: “Oh, what’s this? Flannery Swan is smiling! I don’t think I’ve seen that before!”
Wendy: “Hey, you actually have a really nice smile.”
[Flannery takes her hair and covers her mouth with what she can of it. The rest of the Tetrad crowd around her]
Gilda: “Oh, don’t be so shy, Flans. Show us that smile of yours.” [beat. Flannery slowly lets go of her hair and shows her smile] “There we go, there it is. And how about showing us those teeth and those eyes of yours too? I know they’ve gotta be spar-kliiiiing!”
[beat, once again. Flannery slowly takes off her glasses and grins. She poses bashfully too, holding her glasses in both hands behind her back, and twisting her legs. The Tetrad gush]
Tetrad: “Awww.”
Margo: “Who knew such a bitter jill had so much cute in her?”
Wendy: “It’s always the ones that smile the least, that have the most precious of smiles.”
My National Retro Day artwork for 2023. Not much to say about it, other than it was something I thought up at the last minute; Flannery is a 1980s fan like Gilda, so I thought I should bring her outfit from the Lipara artworks to proper color. And… well, because I won’t get an opportunity to post the Lipara artwork outside of this for… probably a long time, I’ll post it in the stingers below, as well as the ones I made for the Tetrad.
Sorry if I seem low-energy about National Retro Day of all things, it’s almost 11PM as I write this, coming off an evening shift at UPS, which, due to my coworkers taking too long of breaks, everyone who works the job I do, including me, now has to take their break at the same time. So, um, thanks for that, losers. Thanks for reminding me of one of the worst parts of school. The whole class getting punished because a few idiots ruined it for everyone else, who actually behaved.
