Stormy’s Art Roundup – Fall 2024 and Winter 2024/25

I need to work on updating this blog of mine more. Like with the last big break, much of my productivity went to my YouTube, and in between all that, I had a nasty cold and one of my hard drives failed on me (that was why Arcade-ological Discoveries episode 2 took so long, BTW), and my uncle’s kids, my much-younger cousins, came to visit where I live (which, combined with ArcDisc 2’s production troubles, is why the Strange Magic review took so long… they’re tiring to be around, and I didn’t want to swear around them). So before the artwork, let me cross-promote the YouTube channel, for any potential clients that wish to hire me as a video editor or a thumbnail designer!

Sonic Underground Should Stay Buried – An Analysis of the Blue Blur’s Worst Show

Uploaded November 23, 2024. When you DiC around with the Sonic license, you find out.

This is my first video to exceed a viewcount of 2000 and a runtime of 30 minutes; in fact, in the case of the latter, it’s so close to 40 that I consider it to be a 40-minute video, and in the case of the former, it’s close to 3000 views at the time of this blog post. My longtime internet friend Alex Ramirez, also known as A-Ram and LoudToon99, helped me with the script to this video, to make sure what I said about the Sonic franchise’s history was accurate.

As someone who’s been editing for a while now, picking apart this show’s animation and editing errors was fun. Weird thing is, this is a show that, in stills, doesn’t look that bad. Not great, but not terrible. It’s when you actually see it move for more than a few seconds, when it falls apart, and you’re reminded this is DiC’s show. Also the writing on this thing is baffling. It’s a good thing that DiC isn’t around anymore.

WildSnake Deserves Garter Attention – Arcade-ological Discoveries

Uploaded January 26, 2025. It played dead, but it never bled. Instead it lay still in the SNES library, all boxed up and waiting to become an Arcade-ological Discovery.

Arcade-ological Discoveries episodes take less time to edit than the big reviews, and because of that, I thought this video was going to be an easy production. And then the hard drive failure happened, and many of my videos and assets, including the poses for my Grunvalified self, were among those affected. That’s why the mouth shapes here look different than in my previous videos; I ended up having to make 24 new files to replace what was lost. I was planning on retiring those poses anyway (and the next video shows the redesign), but still. So annoying.

As shown by the StormArts logo in the video, this was my first upload after hitting 100 subscribers on YouTube.

Strange Magic is an Affront to Morality – An Analysis of George Lucas’ Worst Film

Uploaded March 29, 2025. 🎵 Eee-evil movie! 🎵

Introducing the redesign to my Grunvalified self alluded to above, this is my longest video to date, clocking in at 40 minutes, 58 seconds, and 19/30 frames. Literally 41 frames away from an even 41 minutes.

Seriously, who’s idea was it to let the ‘I don’t like sand’ guy come up with a love story?

And now to the standalone artwork I made during the period of making these videos!

Scarecrow Margo

Uploaded October 8, 2024 (aka Spooky season). Why is she dressed as a scarecrow when she has a pet seagull? Well, it’s simple really… she’s dressed as a scarecrow. Not a scareseagull. And also Buffett’s not afraid of scarecrows.

Roaching for the Sky

Uploaded November 17, 2024. One of the biggest things that’s happened since the last Art Roundup, is the rise of the Twitter alternative Bluesky, which many former Twitter users have flocked to since Donald Trump’s re-election. For me and many others in the social media circle I’m in, though, our jumping-off point was even earlier; it was the changes to the block function.

My art is doing better on Bluesky than it ever did on Twitter; thanks to being added to ‘starter packs’ (lists of people on Bluesky that allow users to mass-follow), I managed to hit 100 followers within weeks of the beginning of the X-odus (the only way by which I will ever call Twitter ‘X’). And I drew this artwork of the Tetrad in their formal/1980s business attire to celebrate. This is set at a photo studio other than Zapruder’s; it’s a cheaper place with washed-out backdrops and a cockroach infestation… which April is freaking out over, and in her fear, has accidentally punched Gilda in the nose, leading to Wendy getting Mike Wazowski’d.

And speaking of Bluesky follower milestones…

Another Group Photo? Oh, Brother!

Uploaded November 29, 2024.

This one I drew after hitting 200 followers on the app! In this one, they got April’s sibling Auggie into vintage business attire, in the hopes of improving their luck in taking a group photo together.

This was my first time drawing Auggie in a while. Reminder that they’re genderfluid; while it’s not wrong to refer to them as August, by he/him pronouns or as April’s brother, and I do plan to have them referred to by both he/him and they/them pronouns in the webcomic, they are specifically a non-binary genderfluid mephitine, and in an official capacity, I have, do, and will refer to them with gender-neutral terminology.

IT’S-A HER!!!

Uploaded January 16, 2025. I love Princess Daisy, and so do Gilda Grime and Margo Hynde. And when I saw Daisy in the footage of the new Mario Kart game (which we know now to be called Mario Kart World) in the reveal trailer for the Switch 2, I knew I had to draw Gilda and Margo pointing her out, Soyjaks pointing-style.

Tomboy Princess Nerdiness

Uploaded January 23, 2025. I was on a bit of a Daisy kick after the Switch 2 reveal, so I drew Gilda and Margo as best princess.

I look forward to seeing what the Switch 2 era has in terms of Daisy. The Switch era was damn good to us Daisy fans, from seeing her become a fighter in Smash Bros. to seeing her playable in the mainline 2D entry Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Here’s to more and better Daisy appearances in the ninth generation and beyond!

Wendy Wyler – Decades AU Template

Uploaded January 30, 2025, as the third entry to this series that has previously seen Gilda and Margo editions. If you’ve read my webcomic, you’d know the 1980s outfit is officially canon. The 1960s one was the most fun to think up; it’s perhaps a bit anachronistically masculine, but I think it’s still believable overall, and something I see Wendy sciuronally picking out as a 1960s outfit.

Technical Difficulties screens

Gilda Grime

"Gilda Grime – Technical Difficulties screen"A mock-technical difficulties screen I made featuring Gilda Grime, for use as a gag in my videos. VHS-filtered because of course it is, it's retro-lover Gilda Grime. And #NationalRetroDay. #OTOG

Uploaded February 27, 2025. Aside from the stock footage from The Top 10 Best Simpsons Memes, this was the first bit of visuals made for the Strange Magic review.

Wendy Wyler

"Wendy Wyler – Technical Difficulties screen"Because I knew it'd look cheap if I only used one, I made four different Technical Difficulties gags for the Strange Magic video. I've already posted the Gilda one, so first, here's Wendy's. #OTOG

Uploaded… along with the Strange Magic review on March 29, 2025. Ignore what the Bluesky post says.

I imagine that the most embarrassing injury a rodent could have, is getting their teeth knocked out… and that’s why I drew Wendy in such a scenario for her TD screen.

April Lowry

"April Lowry – Technical Difficulties screen"April's technical difficulties screen was a bit deeper into the video than Gilda's and Wendy's, coming about five minutes later. I decided to go with a thrown tomato because of the myth of it dulling skunk stench. #OTOG

The Phoenix of Grunvale (@phoenixofgrunvale.bsky.social) 2025-04-01T18:19:22.754Z
Uploaded along with the Strange Magic review on March 29, 2025. This TD screen is inspired by the (debunked) stench-dulling properties of tomatoes. I like how this splattering came out, both the deformation of the tomato and the splat shape.

Margo Hynde

"Margo Hynde – Technical Difficulties screen"Margo's TD screen was supposed to be used for the post-credits scene, but I scrapped it because I didn't feel my original vision for it worked. But I still made and rendered a version, and intend to use it… sometime. #OTOG

The Phoenix of Grunvale (@phoenixofgrunvale.bsky.social) 2025-04-01T18:21:46.640Z
Uploaded April 1, 2025. This was intended for the post-credits scene of the Strange Magic review, but after I decided to retool it, this iteration of the gag ended up getting the axe. But I figure, if three of the Tetrad get their own version seen, the other one should too. So here’s Margo’s version!

And that’s all for now. Chapter VI is coming soon, as is my next video. And I’ll show both here when they’re uploaded. But until that time, take care, stay safe, be good to each other, reject Trump’s attempts to bring the world down… and have a good one.
